The iguana is a reptile and inhabits the tropical regions of the Caribbean, Central and South America. There are two types – Iguana iguana (green iguana) and Iguana delicatissima (small iguana). Green iguana is more widespread and is often kept as a pet.
Characteristic and behavior of iguanas
Iguanas are primarily herbivores. They can reach 1.5 m in length and 10 kg in weight. The iguana life span is 20 to 35 years.
Each individual has its own character, which requires customization by the owner. As pets, iguanas are one of the most endangered species and their behavior instills confidence. They have a developed voice recognition capability and can respond to their owner when called upon. They can be quite obedient. Iguanas are very nice lizards and can be exceptional pets, but many owners are surprised at how big, powerful and sometimes aggressive iguana can become as they mature. Initially, the iguana may be aggressive for fear of a new environment. Good cultivation of an iguana requires the establishment of trust between it and the owner, which can sometimes take several months.
Iguanas have a lot of weapons, so you need to be careful. They have sharp teeth and can bite and also strike with their strong tail. The dorsal spines are very sharp. Iguanas also have very sharp claws, so expect a few scratches when playing for the first time.
Nutrition of iguana
Young iguanas need finely chopped food. They can be fed twice a day. As they grow, the frequency of feeding changes, so it will be only once a day, and in adult iguanas every other day.
The diet of iguanas must be diversified in order to stay healthy. They need the most vegetables, as much as 80%, then fruits 10%, and the remaining 10% are foods that are only occasionally given.
One thing to know is that iguanas cannot chew raw hard vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and beets, so they should be cooked or finely grated. From fruits, as a special treat, you can give them bananas, apples, melons and watermelons. The remaining 10% of the occasional only foods include cooked rice, pasta, hard boiled eggs, fruit yogurt and bread.
The water must be fresh, so you need to change it several times during the day.
